E-commerce during the Pandemic

As the founder of BRACK.ch, the largest online retailer in Switzerland, Roland Brack witnessed first-hand the effects of the corona virus on e-commerce. While the company did profit from the pandemic, Roland Brack describes it as winning a ski race during which the opponent has had a crash. The benefit is apparent, but profiting off a crisis leaves a bitter aftertaste. The increase in orders was so drastic that they exceeded the maximum output the experienced logistics team of BRACK.CH could maintain. Part of the reason for this surge was the hoarding of certain goods such as toilet paper, and this eventually led to Roland Brack even appealing to customers’ common sense to limit their purchasing. This overtaxing of the system gave him the chance to work on a different level than usual, offering new insights into where optimization was to be made and where there were bottlenecks. The crisis was hard to manage from top-down perspective and also revealed the necessity of keeping autonomy on various managerial levels.
