Guy Parmelin entered politics in 1993 as President of the Residents’ Council in Bursins. From 1994 until his election to the National Council in 2003, he was a member of the Canton of Vaud’s Grand Council. Prior to his election to the Federal Council in December 2015, he was co-owner of an agricultural and wine-growing estate and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of fenaco, the Swiss agricultural group of enterprises. From 2016 until 2018, he headed the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). Since January 2019 he has been head of the EAER.
